Coverage and the Hong Kong IP quirk
Hong Kong has four mobile network operators, and the regulator names them as China Mobile Hong Kong (CMHK), Hong Kong Telecommunications (HKT, selling as csl and 1O1O), Hutchison Telephone Company (trading as Three) and SmarTone. On coverage the bar here is unusually high: the Communications Authority states that 5G coverage in Hong Kong has exceeded 99 percent of the population, on a network commercially launched in April 2020. Worth knowing that its page carries no "as at" date, so treat it as a standing claim rather than a fresh measurement, and note the authority says openly that it takes no responsibility for the coverage information operators publish. In a city this dense that 99 percent matches what you will feel, from Central and Kowloon to the MTR and out to the islands, and because the marketplace does not name the carrier you cannot pick anyway.
Hong Kong finished switching off 2G six weeks ago, and 3G is going next
This is the part to check before you fly, and Hong Kong is further along than almost anywhere. Each operator needs the Communications Authority's prior consent to retire a network, and the authority publishes the dates:

Two things follow from that table. CMHK switching off on 23 June 2026 ended 2G in Hong Kong altogether, so there is no GSM layer left for an old handset to fall back on. And SmarTone retires 3G from 9 October 2026, which is ahead of many trips being planned now rather than behind them. The regulator's own warning is the one to act on: some earlier 4G handsets that only support the older version of VoLTE may not be able to make emergency calls, 999 or 112, over VoLTE once 2G and 3G are gone. The Hong Kong IP quirk, rechecked
A handful of online services do not support Hong Kong and block access from a Hong Kong IP address, most notably ChatGPT. We rechecked this on 7 August 2026 against the list of supported countries and territories that OpenAI publishes itself, and Hong Kong is still not on it, alongside mainland China and Macau. It is a service-side restriction that applies to any Hong Kong connection, a local eSIM included, rather than a fault with the eSIM, and no eSIM brand can sell you around it.
