How much data you need in Vietnam
Coverage: which network
First a correction to our own page. We used to say Vietnam had three networks. It has four: Viettel, Vinaphone (VNPT) and Mobifone are the big three, and Vietnamobile, the only privately owned one, runs its own network too and is named alongside them in the ministry's own coverage reporting. Second, the authority to check has changed name: the Ministry of Information and Communications stopped operating on 18 February 2025 and telecoms moved into the Ministry of Science and Technology, whose Telecommunications Department now publishes the numbers. The old mic.gov.vn address no longer resolves, which is a useful reminder that any guide still citing it is citing something that has moved.
Vietnam is the fastest-moving coverage story on this site, so the dates matter more than the figures. On the ministry's own numbers, 4G reached 99.8 percent of the population as of July 2025. 5G launched commercially in October 2024 and stood at just 26 percent of the population from about 11,000 base stations in July 2025. By early 2026 that had become more than 40,000 base stations covering roughly 92 percent of the population, announced by Nguyen Anh Cuong, Deputy Director of the Telecommunications Department, at the ministry's July 2026 press conference. A tripling of 5G reach inside a year is also a warning: treat any 5G claim about Vietnam without a date on it, including ours, as worthless.
On which network to want, the honest answer is narrower than the one we used to give. No Vietnamese authority publishes a comparable coverage percentage per operator, so we cannot rank all four. What the ministry has published is that Viettel is the largest by some distance: its 4G base stations were about 40 percent of all 4G stations in the country and its own 4G reach was more than 95 percent of the population, as reported in December 2024. So "prefer Viettel outside the cities" survives as advice, on the strength of how much of the national network is Viettel's, not because anyone published a league table. Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and the main beaches are well served whichever network you land on, and remote highlands and small islands are weaker on all of them.
Vietnam has switched off 2G, and 3G is next
Bring a phone that does 4G or 5G. Under Circular 10/2024/TT-BTTTT, issued 13 September 2024, Vietnam delayed its 2G cut-off by one month so people could recover from Typhoon Yagi, and service to handsets supporting only the 2G GSM standard ended after 15 October 2024. Roughly 1.8 million 2G-only subscribers were still on the old network when that extension was granted. 3G is targeted to close in September 2028, announced in July 2024 by Nguyen Phong Nha, then deputy director of the Vietnam Telecommunications Authority, to free spectrum for 4G and 5G. For a traveler the practical read is the same as in Iceland: a handset that falls back to 2G or 3G has less and less to fall back to, so check that yours supports 4G or 5G, and VoLTE, before you fly.
So what should you do. Because eSimania is a marketplace it does not name the exact network, so for off-the-beaten-track trips confirm the plan or favour one that states it uses Viettel. Speeds are carrier dependent and never guaranteed.
