How much data you need in the UK
Coverage and roaming
The UK now has three mobile networks, not four. When the Competition and Markets Authority cleared the Vodafone and Three merger on December 5, 2024, it described the starting position plainly: "The 4 mobile network operators in the UK are Vodafone UK, Three UK, BTEE and Virgin Media O2." One part of that decision is worth knowing if you buy through a marketplace, because it is about you rather than about them. The CMA did not wave the merger through: it attached binding commitments, including delivery of a joint network plan over the next eight years, caps on selected tariffs and data plans for three years, and pre-set prices and contract terms for wholesale services, also for three years, so that virtual network providers can obtain competitive terms. Travel eSIMs are those wholesale customers. The commitments are overseen by the CMA together with the telecoms regulator, Ofcom.
On the ground, cities and main routes are well served on any of the three, while the remote Highlands and the islands can vary on all of them.
