How much data you need in Spain
Coverage and roaming
Spain has four mobile networks, and if you have read a guide that lists three, that is the part which has dated. In its May 2026 figures the market regulator, the Comision Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia (CNMC), counted 62.96 million mobile lines and reported that Movistar, Vodafone and MasOrange together held 85.6 percent of them, rising to 98.1 percent once Digi is included. The genuinely useful thing about Spain is that you do not have to trust a sentence like "coverage is good", ours included. The Secretaria de Estado de Telecomunicaciones e Infraestructuras Digitales publishes a mobile broadband service map that draws the service area of each base station down to a grid of 50 metres by 50 metres for 4G and 5G, and names the operators serving each area, including those reselling over another network. It exists because Article 22 of the European Electronic Communications Code obliges member states to give people this tool, its methodology follows BEREC recommendations, and the underlying data comes from the operators themselves. Before you read that map, read how it counts, because this is the honest answer to "is Spain covered". The ministry defines it plainly: a location has 4G or 5G coverage if it sits in the coverage area of at least one network. A marketplace eSIM does not let you pick which network you land on, so "Spain is covered" and "your plan will work here" are not the same claim. That gap is negligible in Barcelona, Madrid and along the costas. It is the whole story in mountain villages, on Picos de Europa trails and on back roads, which is why checking your own route beats any reassurance we could write.
On roaming, if your home plan comes from inside the European roaming zone you may not need a travel eSIM at all. Regulation (EU) 2022/612 abolished retail roaming surcharges, so you use your domestic allowance in Spain, and it runs until 2032. It is worth knowing exactly who is inside that zone, because the European Commission defines it by naming countries: the 27 EU member states, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, and since 1 January 2026 Ukraine and Moldova as well. It has not applied to the United Kingdom since Brexit, and Switzerland is not on the list.
